Dear Friends:
On Tuesday, August 24th at 11 a.m., I will be attending a groundbreaking ceremony for the new William T. Rowe development, located on the corner of Ward Street and Sylvan Avenue. This 104-unit project will replace the current Rowe housing complex located on Howard Avenue with a mix of affordable and market-rate units, along with retail and supportive services. This project is being developed in close partnership between the City, State and Federal government and our local partner, Yale-New Haven Hospital. Here’s what else is happening in New Haven: Upcoming Elderly Services Events The City’s Department of Elderly Services, in collaboration with the Parks Department and FSW, Inc., will be sponsoring a fishing derby on the Tuesday, September 8th at Lighthouse Point Park. Elderly services will also sponsor a trip to the “Big E” on Connecticut Day, September 22nd, and apple-picking trip in October. These are just a few of the upcoming events sponsored by Elderly Services. For a full listing of upcoming events, click here. Summer’s Last Roar The Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History will be celebrating the end of summer with a free admission day on Saturday, September 4th. Doors are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and parking is also free. Visitors will have a chance to win prizes, touch fossils and other specimens, speak to docents and educators, and take “Dinosaurs to Egypt” guided tours of museum highlights. It will also be one of your last chances to view the exhibition “Coffee: The World in Your Cup,” which ends on September 19th. Citizens’ Academy The New Haven Police Department is currently seeking applicants for its popular Citizens’ Academy which will begin on September 8, 2010 and will run until November 10, 2010 on Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. This program is designed to improve communication and understanding between police and community members and will give approximately 35 local residents the opportunity to work with officers and get a behind the scenes look at a progressive, community-minded police department. Applications are available from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays at the Police Academy (710 Sherman Parkway), where the 8-week course will be held on Wednesday evenings. Forms may also be obtained at police substations, the main desk at police headquarters at One Union Avenue, area libraries and on the City of New Haven homepage at: www.cityofnewhaven.com. In addition, details may be found online at: www.cityofnewhaven.com/police. I hope you have a happy and healthy week! Very truly yours, John DeStefano, Jr. Mayor
